You can easily get away with just three clubs in your bag when you are just starting out. Stick with a 7 iron, a sand-wedge and a putter. You can use the 7 for most shots on (and off) the fairway as well as off the tee. Remember that when you start it is all about accuracy and not distance. The sand-wedge and the putter are obviously useful.
The 7 iron. If you choke it down you can use it to do a chip. If you hold it at a regular grip, it’s one of the easiest clubs to handle! If you’re a beginner you may want to avoids the 3,4 and 5 irons. Due to their length they are harder to play. & also, one has to have the right hand speed to control them!
Whatever you have in your bag. You need to be comfortable with all of them. If you get that "God I hope I don’t have to hit an 8 iron" feeling, your done for.
For your first time, don’t worry about what others are doing (well, don’t do this ever) just get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. If you like the game, consider getting a few lessons from a certified teacher. That will drop your score quicker than anyone or any club will.

Remember that consistency is the key.
