Are you topping it or smacking the ground before it? widen your stance and check, check , check your ball placement. I place mine halfway between my front foot and the middle of my stance… then think "sweep the ball". The key to a good hit is taking the club back along the target line low to the ground. This gets the body thinking that you’ll be contact ting the ball just before you start to rise. I love my fairway woods, before long you will too… they’re great for the long par 5′s.

you are probably hitting them on the upswing like they are a driver because they are woods but this will cause you to either hit the ground before the ball or hit the top of the ball because they are not in the air on a tee like the driver

Play it off of your left foot.

all the other advice is good, but i would suggest trying a hybrid.

Woods are tough to hit from imperfect lies, and especially roughs. A hybrid 2 can replace your 3 wood and you will find that after you get used to it it will treat you much better from the rough and uneven lies and divots.

If you dont want to try a hybrid, reach for the longest iron you can hit unless you have the ball laying on a perfect patch of fairway.
