Try using punch shots. It’s an advantage when the wind is strong.
You dont have to play all low shots. its been very windy the past couple weeks here in Georgia. I like hitting high full shots into the wind, just make sure you take a couple clubs more then usual. That way you can really control the ball when it lands, and it usually lands dead.
Place the ball a little further back in your stance and hit a low punch with a 3/4 follow through. You won’t lose much distance and very easy to control.
try to keep the back of your left hand towards the target as long as you can after impact.. on elevated tees, i like using my driver and hit a low stinger.. it’s niiiccceee…
hit the ball low and try to not get alot of backspin
You want to hit low draws instead of high fades.
Hit a lot of 3-irons (2-irons or even 1-irons) off the tee. Fairway woods and hybrids are harder to control in the wind than irons.
Learn the knock-down shot for approaches. Take 1 more club, move ball back in stance, and hit with an abbreviated swing. The ball should fly on a much lower trajectory.
First, I’d tighten your hat a little bit……..
Then, you need to keep the ball low, everything low. Tee it low, keep your hands during your backswing low. Low follow through. Almost like you’re hitting a lot of punch shots.
The ball will generally be played more towards the back of your stance. I recommend hitting a few EXTRA warmup balls on the range just to get a feel of trying to keep it low.
But please, don’t expect to carve every one of your shots down and through the wind. Go out there and play with the wind and try not to fight it. On crosswind shots, instead of trying to punch a 6, take a 4 or a 5 and see if you can judge the wind enough to control your shots.
This game gets lost too often in trying to do too well all of the time. I am a poster child for such actions. This is a game that you don’t have to be good at to love. Even in the wind, even in the rain.
Playing in the wind is some of the best practice you’ll ever get. Try to keep it low, and make sure to account for the extra roll you get from doing so. And darn it go have fun.
learn to draw or fade the ball so that you can hold the line of the ball by fading/ drawing against the wind
‘When it’s breezy, swing it easy"
Another tip is to play the ball towards the back of your stance and hit low punch shots. If you let the ball get up in the air it will be affected more so keep it low and let it run.
Keep your shots low by playing the ball back in your stance..taking an extra club and choking down on the club.
For putting..try a wider stance it helps you have better balance. thats why a lot of europeans have wide stances because its so windy there that they need to have good balance.
The best thing is to learn in playing in the wind is learning how to hit punch shots or low shots that keep low in the swing.
For example,
1. Little wider stance
2. A more abbreviated swing.
3. Ball a little more back in the stance.
Keep the ball low. Grip down on the club and the ball further back in the stance and hit down on the ball. A punch type short will be good as the wind wont affect the ball but you probably will lose distance. So just keep ball flight low.
I feel you man. When I played Spanish Bay a couple days ago, on every holde the wind was 35+ mph.
Tips:
DO NOT hit fairway woods and hybrids off tees. I don’t care how short the hole is, those things will go 150+ ft higher than normal, go in some weird direction, and go alot shorter. Teeing off with long irons is fine.
Hit alot of low, punch/stinger shots to keep them out of the wind.
Chip with clubs like 7-9 irons. When I played Spanish Bay, the wind was so strong that my chips with my lob wedge from 5 yards off the green were seriously starting at the flag, and then being blown off the green.
If you absolutely have to hit the ball high, if you can, try to fade the ball (right handers) into right-to-left winds. Also draw the ball into left-to-right winds. The opposite forces cancel each other out.
If you are with the wind, you can hit a high, normal shot, just be sure to take less club. A general rule is with 10 mph more wind, take 1 more or less club.
1) "When it’s breezy – swing easy" The most common mistake is to think we have to swing harder to compensate for the wind. Swing easy and make good contact.
2) Take one extra club for every 10 MPH headwind.
3) Remember that a crosswind will tend to knock the ball down as well.
a lot of good answers already. Keep it low and let it roll. The only thing I would add in regards to the Punch or Stinger is that the hands have to stay ahead of the club face. You have to maintain the delofting effect on the club face
