I signed up for golf, because of the small groups, no cuts. I’ve never played before. Are their any tips/rules or anything you could tell me?
I dont care much if I get my A*s kicked by better golfers at the moment. I’m sure that by senior year I’ll be okay at it. I just want it on my college resume that I did something besides get good grades
Also. We won’t have a match/game thing for 11 months. So we have that long to practice.
Have fun.
Hmmm… golf tips, eh? Well, first off, go buy yourself some clubs. You want some with long, sturdy shafts. Try grabbing and stroking some shafts before selecting the set that you want. After selecting them, go to the range with a guy who knows a bit about golf. Once there, have him show you how to get a good stroke with his shaft. He’ll probably show you his clubhead a few times. You’ll get a good chance here to see if it’s straight. If it is, he’ll really be whacking the hell out of his balls. Trust me, you’ll be able to notice right away. Once you get a good look, grab a few of his balls. Grab a shaft and start stroking away. If yours aren’t working, be sure to use his shaft. It should be good and straight.
Other than that, just have some fun. You’ll really enjoy it if you just relax.
wow i wish i was in your town. You need to shoot an 80 in qualifying for three days straight to have a shot at making it. A tip is that you shouldnt have joined becasue it wont be fun to get your ass kicked by good golfers.
If you have a video game setup at home, it would be worth purchasing a golf game to get acquainted via simulation some of the terminology, rules and techniques.
LESSONS – do this first, or it won’t be much fun. Get with a qualified golf professional in your area – he or she will be the most important person for learning how to play (including etiquette, rules, etc).
But, if you’re not having fun, stop doing it. Life’s too short and golf isn’t that important. It can be fun, but just like anything, some people hate it. Find something you like to do.
But, I hope you do like it. Good luck.
Don’t go buy clubs. Check with your coach. I’m a high school coach and I give away about 5 sets of clubs each year. It bothers me when a new person come out with new clubs. Usually the clubs are junk and they paid good money. Try it first to see if you like it. We’ll cover the rules all season long. Have fun and practice, practice, practice…
best tip for you from me is to listen and try out whatever advice anyone gives you but at the same time do thing the way that best for you. Ive been playing golf since I was 4 so thats almost 21 years and ill tell you ive tried it all. Some things will work for you while others are just gonna make things worse. Personally im always adapting the way i play changing my grip ive played with several different brands of clubs changed the mechanics of my swing half a dozen time the bottom line is just fine what ur comfortable with and stick with that. As you become a better golfer you will change things to suit you skill level or your body type for that mattter so just go have fun don’t think about it too much. And btw if y ou want to get good fast spend hours on the driving range not just hitting your driver like you see so many beginers do. Yeah its always great to be able to drive a ball 300 yards but its not gonna do you any good if you cant put it on the green from there so hit your long irons and practice placment shots with your wedges that in my opinion is the most important part of golf
This is the time to enjoy your self, and I think the fact that you wanting to try something new is very creative and brave. You will enjoy golf, a lot of people do not know the first thing about golf and I think the sport is very relaxing for the mind and body. It takes a certain skill, but i think you can do it. So, don’t worry, and have fun with it, meet new people, and you will do fine!
it’s going to take you 3-4 years to get average at it – you really should have started sooner – you have a lot of lost time to make up for – if you are not passionate about golf and the only thing you are trying to do is pad your college resume, you picked the wrong sport – you are going to have to hit thousands of balls a week to try and get good – good luck
Go to your local GC or Range and get lessons from a PRO.
You need to be able to hit the ball off of a tee before you should step onto a course…not for the sake of the other golfers but for yourself. You don’t need to be humiliated on the GC by whiffing at balls….and a PRO will teach your the RIGHT WAY…otherwise you will develop bad habits instead of good ones……Also, I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on a set of clubs….a FULL set of "Signature" clubs will do just great while you are learning, however make sure the your local Golf Shop checks the swing weights before you buy…you need them to be consistent throughout the set…Hit lots and lots of clubs before you buy…PINGs are for everyone.
Then when you learn the game and understand the difference between a 25 dollar driver and a $350 driver, then go get the better set of clubs that best suites you and your game……
MOST OF ALL…HAVE A BLAST, because GOLF is a BLAST to play, regardless of your skill level……
PRACTICE A LOT…remember, Tiger got has good as he is because he hits over a thousand balls a day…still.
Listen to Ted P and Dan Cook above. You’ve got some good advice, but I kinda hate to hear you’re just doing it for your resume. Golf is kind of sacred. It is the only sport left that requires character, honesty, respect as well as skill. It has great tradition, and being on the course is like enjoying a day at a beautiful park. I must warn you, the first time you hit a 7 iron a hundred yards straight down the fairway, you will be hooked for life. Good luck and keep your head down and your left arm straight!
certainly there are rules for golf – plz check with ur coach.
I think BigmoneyG has pretty much sumed it up.
