Ok, so I just started Playing golf about a week ago. I have a couple problems…
First off, when I stroke the club, I always seem to miss the ball the firs t two or three strokes. How do I Prevent that?
Second, when I do hit the ball, it won’t go high, like it will just bounce around on the fairway. How can I make it go higher? .
And also when I hit the ball, it would just go off to the right. How can I make it go straight?
One more question: what are all the different clubs for? When do I use each one? It confuses me…
If you have any YouTube videos you know of that would help, please post a link. Thanks so much!!!!
If it helps I’m 17 years old…. right handed
Go to your local library and rent out some golf videos and books for beginners for free, practice what you learned and then maybe check in with your high school golf coach to get some pointers. Lessons can be very expensive, do a little educating and learning first, then practice, then think about basic group lessons. Learn your basic grip, stance and swing with videos, very important.
The reason why I did not go right for the lessons as everyone else does:
17yrs old…no job?, no money? Private lessons run about $35-75 for 30minutes. Group lessons which I have recommended can be as low as $6-10 for 1hr (junior rates, you might be a hair to old).
You’ve only golfed for one week…how much money do you want to put in right off the bat, you can learn the basics from video’s, books, and your golf coach.
get lessons from your local pga pro.. don’t just go to the range and start hitting balls.. this will ingrain bad habits that will be hard to break..
The first two of these problems are all symptoms of the same thing or two. Without seeing your swing I am going to guess that you are either lifting your head at impact or closing the club face at impact. Ball going straight right means you are eitehr swinging on an incorrect swing plane or not turning your lower body through the swing (where you belt buckle ends up is the direction the ball will go.)
GET LESSONS. Even just a few half hour sessions will improve your game enough that you can work on these things.
REMEMBER, ITS A GAME, HAVE FUN!
These problems aren’t as easy to fix as some may fix. Yes, you probably will need lessons. But here are a few tips:
First:When you stroke, if you measure in your head where the club will come around, it should be a bit easier to hit the ball, and if you keep your HEAD DOWN it might be a little easier to hit the ball.
Second:To hit it higher, you’ll have to hit the ball closer to the bottom. Instead of hitting the ball directly on the side, try turning the club a bit so it can get under the ball further.
Third:I’m not completely sure how to correct this problem, I have it too. However, If you aim towards the left, then it will go towards the middle of the fairway.
Fourth:The clubs are different so different clubs will give you different length. The clubs from shortest length to longest length is like this:
Putter–Wedges–Irons–Hybrids(These are a bit rare)–Woods–Driver
Sorry, no video!
Get yourself a downhill lie, 10 golf balls and a 1-Iron. After 10 swings you’ll never want to play again.
Like many others have already suggested, take lessons. One avenue to explore (which won’t cost you nearly as much) is to sign up for a clinic. You will have one lesson a week with some other people at the same time. Learn the fundamentals CORRECTLY before bad habits get ingrained into your swing. One more thing. Don’t watch those horrible internet lessons. A swing is like a snow flake. There are no 2 alike. A professional will be able to guide you to a better swing to suit your physical abilities.
