You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. The Greatest Game Ever Played stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (Holes) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, The Hours), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (One False Move, Apollo 13), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. The Greatest Game Ever Played works. --Bret Fetzer

Although he is inspired to re-ignite his golf career, challenge his opponent in the U.S. Open, and win the affection of the woman of his dreams, McAvoy has just one flaw: he's a show off when he should just focus on playing the game. Reunited with his Bull Durham writer-director Ron Shelton, Costner fits into his role like a favorite pair of shoes, and costar Cheech Marin scores a memorable scene-stealing comeback as McAvoy's best buddy, Romeo Posar. Mixing his love of sports with his flair for fresh, comedic dialogue, Shelton takes this enjoyable movie down unexpected detours (although some may find it a bit too long), and his characters are delightfully unpredictable. --Jeff Shannon

Director Harold Ramis employs a mixture of Mad magazine/National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramis just lets his colorful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically re-creating his crude standup routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favorites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. The DVD version includes production notes and the theatrical trailer. --Dave McCoy

Jack Nicklaus has one. And now, Phil Mickelson has one. No, we're not talking about the Masters championships (although Mickelson has three of those), but a golf instruction video. Emmy-winner Terry Jastrow, who produced Palmer's and Nicklaus' own bestselling videos, brings his keen eye to this master class that concentrates on what Mickelson calls "the most important part of the game" (half of all shots played take place inside 50 yards, he states). Over the course of this nearly two-hour program, Mickelson demonstrates putting, chipping using his advocated "hinge and hold" method, bunker play, and his signature "flop shot." In an entertaining segment, he also demonstrates two specialty shots, a "Two Balls in Bunker" shot (don't try this at home) and the "Backward Over-the-Head" shot. The demonstrations are repeated in slow-motion and seen from a variety of angles. This program is for the serious golfer, but beginners need not feel too intimidated. Mickelson is a natural in front of the camera and is able to impart a lot of information in a relaxed style that makes even the most advanced concepts accessible. As one golf commentator exults during one of the dramatic highlights clips included as a bonus feature, this is as good as it gets. --Donald Liebenson
