Any advice on making my high school golf team?

This year I’m a sophomore and I plan on trying out for golf. I never actually play golf on a field, closest to golf was golf land, but recently I had an interest in golf. So this year is going to be the first time I’m ever going to be playing golf. Are there any advices to making at least JV. Also tips to playing golf.

Take lessons and they can teach you the good habits before you have time to develop bad ones. Practice and try to play with the good members of your team.

i know my golf team let everyone play….just on mondays…. the starters played everyday. chances are you are gonna get shot down…but just practice practice and practice some more. and you’ll make it next year. golf is a hard sport to play, but the hard is what makes it fun.

well, this years, there are more and more people come to play golf, and lucky that, you are one of them, for this game is really good.
even though,I’m not so pro. in this game. I thought that, if you wanna participate in this funny game, since you never ever play it, you could join in a golf school for the besic skills, or, if it’s possible, you could call for the help from your friends, and then learn some basic knowledge about golf.
what’s more, you shoulc at least have the golf clubs at first, this is more important than anything else, for more information, please check on the following website http://www.ebayoyo.com
there will be more information about what you need.
    have a good time!

Learn the basics, and start with your short game. Too many people try to start playing golf by hitting it long, and then working on chipping and putting later. You wouldn’t start diving on the high board. Even if you didn’t make your JV this year, you’d be best on your team next year. There are some good fundamentals DVDs at http://www.hitdowndammit.com

The best advice I can give you is to take lessons from a quality instructor. You can most likely find one at the local golf course.

The most important thing is to have fun playing golf, to love playing golf, even when things are not going so well.

Play and practice often and make sure to enjoy both – Don’t make practice boring!
Practice your short game most often (chipping and putting) – this is where you will save the most shots and consequently make your scores better quicker. This is also FREE practice – just find a green!

Concentrate on your own game, not that of others on your team.
Compete against yourself. Make yourself want to do better rather than hoping others will do poorly.

Develop a strategy that works for you – Don’t take a certain club because everyone else takes that club. Evaluate your own ability and make good choices. If you only hit a 5-iron a 120 yards, don’t take a PW on a 120 yard par 3 because everyone else does. Concentrate on accuracy over distance every time!

Wherever possible play with people who are better than you, look at what they do well, and then incorporate it into your game.

Remember you are only a sophmore and only just starting to play. Don’t be too dissapointed if you don’t make it this year. Take advantage of being able to practice on the team and use it as a springboard for next year.
If you dedicate yourself, you will likely be the person who has improved the most be the end of the season. That is a great accomplishment and will help you be ready for next year – Varsity perhaps!

Get some lessons, and practice in the range and practice green, and go out to the course before trying out. Also it’s a course, not a field, that is how I know that you really don’t know anything about golf, like calling the course, the field, and calling clubs, sticks. What is golf land, is it a mini putt putt golf course, or a driving range.

  13. Henny Bogan says:

First, you are going to need "thick skin", meaning, you’ll probably hear a lot negative things about how you don’t have chance and how you’re not good enough, you’re a hack, how your clubs are cheap, and, and, and, etc. Kids can be pretty mean to each other. So, accept it and prepare to deal with it in a non-confrontational manner, mentally. You can be above all that, if you want it more than they do.

Second, read a very old, short book: Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. Practice the stuff he says to practice….like work on the grip only without hitting balls. You’ll get better at learning how to hit the ball and probably know more than a lot of really good players (even if you can’t execute as well).

Third, get Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible. This will help you learn how to score better. You can use it for the rest of your life.

Fourth, try to connect with a friend that is already on the team….somewhere/somehow. They’ll tell you all the things you should know about competitive golf, who makes the team, what the coach is looking for, all the things you can eventually find out on your own, but it would make the rest of it much easier if you have someone on your side.

Fifth, get lessons. Now. Go to Golfland or sign up at the local Junior college and have someone start teaching you not only how to hit the ball, but all the other things that are just as important: safety, etiquette, "keeping it in play", the USGA rules of golf, etc.

Sixth: watch the Golf Channel. Whenever you can, if you can. On the internet, set the Yahoo/Sports/Golf page to your favorites and check it daily…all kinds of good stuff there, even for the best players in the world.

Last, when you feel overwhelmed, beat on, downtrodden and like its just not going well and you want to give up: don’t. Go ahead and let yourself take a break. Even Tiger takes a break. Watch a movie or two. Especially, the "Greatest Game Ever Played" and The Bobby Jones story.

Golf also has an incredibly great history. There’s so much to learn and appreciate…it goes way beyond ability or capability. You’ll get it, eventually.

Even if you don’t make the team the first year, or the second year, or Senior year…keep trying to get good. If you can at least get to a respectable level and understanding of the game, it will serve you well throughout life in many ways I cannot even begin to explain this short note.

My HighSchool had noone interested in golf out of a 7,500 students besides me, and 4 other kids. So it was basically anyone can join.

you really have to practice a lot. i practice at least between 2 and 4 hours a day, every single day. when you practice, make sure you’re not just repeatedly hitting balls at the range without really paying attention to what’s happening. go to the golf course and learn course management. pick different days to work on different things. make sure you know all the rules, and have a very competitive attitude. also, invest in a few lessons from some experienced golf pros. it will really make a difference. make sure you get the right clubs that work for you, too. if you want to make the team bad enough, you will. just give it 100% and get started as early as you can
